Story
Every now and then a real musical legend comes by and there is no way I can let those opportunities pass. When I heard that Stevie Wonder was coming out I couldn’t wait, but I started to feel uneasy about meeting him because I didn’t know what the reaction would be like due to his blindness, how was I going to do this? People had told me that Stevie does do autographs and photos and I was being told to give it a go, so I set about painting. I arrived at the airport thinking I had missed Stevies’ flight arriving, when I got there I quickly learnt that he wasn’t on the flight he was supposed to have been on and therefore hadn’t yet arrived, so naturally I was pleased. Just one hour after I got there Stevies’ plane landed and myself and about 5 other fans watched Stevie come off the plane with his entourage. I held my painting and Stevie, who was being chaperoned by his daughter stopped walking. I assumed he was being told there were some fans waiting for him. a security guard came over to us and said we could all meet Stevie. We were told to introduce ourselves one at a time and ask for what we wanted. I was first to approach. I walked over and said my name and what I do, Stevie held out his hand and we shook hands, his daughter asked me to explain the painting to Stevie. When I asked if he would like to sign it, he smiled and said he’d rather we have a photo together with the painting, Which I did and then stepped aside for the other fans. After Stevie had met everyone, he and his entourage walked away…………
After a few steps they stopped again and the security guard came back over to me and asked me to come back and speak to Stevie again. When I got to Stevie we shook hands again and he said he would sign my painting only for me, I was more than happy obviously. I put the pen in Stevies’ hand and he told his daughter what he wanted to write, she guided his hand onto the canvas and he began to write, his daughter directing his hand so he wrote in the correct position, it was amazing to watch him do this. As some of the fans tried to photograph the event they were told “no pictures “ so I was unable to get a photo of him signing, but I didn’t mind, I was just thrilled to meet a legend. Stevie is great! An incredibly happy person who loves life to the fullest even after being struck with blindness. He invited me to his show and I met him yet again backstage after the show.
