Story

Another great character to paint, Robert Smith. I did this painting very early on before I began meeting my heroes so I was elated when I heard that The Cure were finally coming back to tour Australia during August 06.

A small bunch of fans waited for their arrival at the airport, and sooner than I had expected we were watching them disembark the aeroplane. Now this is one band that is instantly recognisable ! However as panic sets in when you watch your idles walk before you, you tend to make silly mistakes and fumble over words etc. This time I watched the band approach us, but first came guitarist Simon Gallup, hair all over the place looking very much like Robert ! So in my panic I showed him my painting and called out, “ Hi Robert “…………..he looked at me as I began to realise my mistake and said to me, “ He’s just there “ pointing behind. How embarrassing, having said that I’m getting used to my moments of stupidness.

The whole band signed autographs for the fans, and Robert very quietly signed and posed for photos taking his time for each of us.

The Cure are an awesome band, be prepared if you ever get to see them in concert for they can play for quite some time, way beyond what you expect leaving you getting every dollars worth and feeling like you’ve almost heard every song the band have ever recorded.
