Story

One of my all time favourites! I love Nick Cave and have done for many years, I listen to all his albums and can’t find anything that disappoints me in his catalogue.
Nick was in Sydney for his Grinderman tour in October 07. When I first heard he was touring I thought, ‘oh no, I’m gonna have to paint all the Bad Seeds‘ that’s a lot of painting! As it turned out there would only be four I had to paint, I had already painted a solo portrait of Nick quite sometime ago and I took this with me to meet Nick and Grinderman at the airport.

Waiting for Nick Cave has been one of my quickest feats so far, so it was a very pleasant surprise to see him just an hour after my arrival, he came off the plane straight away with his band, and I was the only fan there to greet him, so getting his attention was no problem, he was very relaxed very funny and exceptionally cool ! He joked with my wife and I as she filmed the whole scene not at all bothered by the rolling camera. After showing him my Grinderman painting I asked if he would autograph my solo painting of him, and he was more than happy to do so. When I pulled it out of the bag he held it and commented, “wow look at that !, that’s back when I was good lookin’ “. He scrawled a fabulous autograph for me, wished me good luck and even kissed my wife goodbye as he and the band left. I was so excited with this moment, and obviously have watched the movie playback over and over ever since.
